Your Democracy denim works hard to keep you looking polished and feeling comfortable, so in return, you’ll want to take care of your jeans. While our ultra-stretchy denim is designed to last and provide a perfect fit, following the correct care instructions will yield the longest-lasting results, preventing your denim from fading, shrinking, or tearing.
Whether you’re hoping to keep your indigo Itty Bitty Boot jeans as vibrant as possible or prevent your black cropped flares from developing a tear, this guide will give you the ins and outs of caring for your Democracy denim and keep your jeans looking as great as the day you bought them.
Democracy Denim Care 101
Wash Them Infrequently
One of the quickest ways to damage your denim is by washing it too often. You may throw your tops and socks into the laundry after every wear, as they’re more likely to accumulate unwanted stains and smells but your jeans should only be gracing the washing machine around once in every three to 10 wears (YES, you read that right!) to prevent them from getting broken down and worn out.
This might sound scandalous, but your denim is due for a wash only once it begins to smell musty; so, what can you do in the meantime? Treat your jeans with a fabric freshening spray in-between wears to keep them smelling great and treat any spills or stains with a spot treatment. This way, your denim will look polished, smell clean, and won’t get tired after too many spins in the washing machine. Plus, you’re doing the planet a favor, too!
Follow Care Instructions Carefully
Every pair of Democracy denim bottoms comes with a care instruction tag, informing you of the best way to treat your jeans and avoid any stains, fading, or shrinkage. The most frequent instructions you’ll want to stick to are as follows:
- Turn your denim inside out (and remove anything from the pockets) before washing.
- Machine wash cold with similar colors to avoid any dye from darkening your lighter garments.
- Use the gentle cycle on your washing machine.
- Tumble dry your denim on a low setting or hang to dry.
- If you need to iron your jeans, do so on the lowest setting while they’re still turned inside out.
By sticking to these guidelines, your jeans will keep their shape and vibrancy for longer, without the risk of shrinking or getting worn out.
Use the Right Products
If you’ve been washing your jeans with fabric softener or relying on a bleach that contains chlorine to remove stains, you’ll want to tuck those products to the back of your cupboard. Using a fabric softener when washing your denim can add unnecessary chemicals to the material, causing it to break down faster over time. The same goes for any laundry detergents that contain harsh chemicals.
When it comes to treating stains, bleach is often everyone’s go-to. However, the type you use can be the difference between keeping your denim for years and having to buy another pair due to unsightly bleach stains. You’ll want to opt for color-safe or non-chlorine bleach that you can use on colored fabrics to keep your denim looking good as new.
Separate Your Colors
You probably wash your white laundry and your colored laundry separately already, but if you’re throwing your black jeans and medium blue denim bottoms into the same load, you might be tempting fate. While Democracy denim is unlikely to bleed dye onto other clothing (especially when washed in cold water), black jeans contain much more dye than other colors and run the risk of bleeding in the washing machine. Keeping your laundry separated by whites, colors, and darks will keep your lighter clothing looking bright.
Repair What’s There
As much as we love a brand-new pair of jeans, years of wearing (and loving) them might someday lead to a minor tear or hole, no matter how well you take care of them. But, instead of tossing out your favorite denim bottoms (and adding to the landfill), you can repair what’s there and create an entirely new look!
Who doesn’t love a vintage-looking pair of jeans you can rock with a t-shirt or comfortable sweater? Patches can cover unsightly holes in your fabric while showcasing a cool design, or a bold-colored thread can be used to repair tears in your old blue jeans, adding contemporary style to your wardrobe. In addition, creating cut-offs can be as easy as it sounds and will prepare you for warmer weather without a trip to the store!
Your Democracy denim is designed to stay with you for a long time, but it takes a little bit of TLC to keep them looking as good as new. And, if they someday develop tears or holes after many years of styling, we’ll always have a brand-new, on-trend style for you to try.
