With our jeans, we usually recommend sizing down one size from your usual pants for a comfortable and flattering fit. But, if you’re looking for a way to ensure your denim looks and feels flawless every time, you’ll want to pay attention to each pair’s individual measurements.

How do I find my bottoms measurements?

To find your fit, here's how to find your measurements:

Hips: Wrap a measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips.
Waist: Wrap a measuring tape around the smallest part of your waist.
Inseam: Measure from the bottom of your hemline, or just above your foot.
Leg Opening: Lay the cuff of your favorite jeans flat, and measure from one end to the other, then double that number.

What is the inseam?

The inseam is the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg opening and will determine how long your jeans will fit.

To measure inseam, you will want to measure from the bottom of your hemline, or just above your foot along the inside leg to your crotch.

Cute but stinky

"Nice jeans with a flattering fit. The first pair I ordered had a strong musty smell (still there after 6 washes) and Democracy sent a replacement pair that also smelled and were a little darker. Maybe part of the dye process but I still haven't been able to wear them. I will keep washing them and perhaps one day they will be ok. I have 11 pairs of this brand of jeans and love them all and have never had this problem before."

"The quality of the denim is really nice, and I love the artisanal wash. I ordered the same size I usually get in my Democracy jeans but I find them a little too loose, even after just washing. I wish I had sized down because I really like the cut and wash."

Too long to be considered petite

"I have bought petite clothing for 20 years. I have never had to take up any pants when ordering petite. I have had to get 2 pair of your petite jeans take up because they are too long. My first pair I bought from Amazon so I thought maybe they had a defect because I bought a regular pair from TJ Maxx and the petite pants were actually longer than the regular pants. I thought what a horrible joke on the short girls. So I ordered my last pair from the website and I still had to get the bottoms hemmed up a bit. I have a pair of cuffed pants from Short Stories that are great. I love the fit of the waist and hips, that is true to size. When I get the skinny jeans hemmed up the bottoms are not skinny anymore."

"Another basically perfect pair of jeans from Democracy! Perfect stretch around my belly, hips, and thighs. Sturdy, high-quality fabric. Somehow fits both my larger stomach AND my smaller behind, making both look cuter and tighter than they are. Only issue is that this is the first 16S I've gotten, and they're a bit long; they drag on the floor a little. BUT that's probably because I'm 5' 1" and most of that is torso, not legs."

"First off, the Democracy costumer service is amazing! They made the process of exchanging my other jeans for these and I couldn’t be happier. The fit is roomy and a combo of flare and a bit of a wide leg. For reference I’m 5’4 and 160 lbs. I bought a 14P and they are roomy but look good. You can possibly size down. I do carry my weight in my mid section"
